You’ve decided to put a ring on it and this is an exciting time, but now the work begins in finding an engagement ring that speaks to your partner’s style while being a valuable purchase. Are you sweating yet? Don’t fret – we’ve got you covered.
First things first, make sure you and your partner are ready to get engaged. This could possibly save you a whole lot of time and money, plus it will increase the likelihood that your girlfriend will accept the ring you’ve worked so hard to find!
Once that is sorted and you’re happy to be proposing marriage, check out these top tips to help you seal the deal with the most gorgeous ring.
Get Sorted on Her Style
You need to take your girlfriend’s personal taste into account. Chatting to her close friends can help you figure out the style of ring she would like (such as contemporary or antique) as well as her thoughts on colourful stones – these days gemstones are becoming more popular in engagement rings.
Would she like the ring to be custom-made with the use of loose diamonds? Her friends will probably know more about this than you do (especially if you tend to zone out when they chat)
Another good idea to understand her style is to look at the type of jewelry she wears, especially when it comes to metals. Does she mainly wear rose gold or platinum, for instance? She will most likely have chosen that metal because it’s flattering to her skin tone and tastes, so don’t buy a ring that’s yellow gold if she only wear silver jewelry.
Figure out the Four Cs
Diamonds play a big role in gorgeous engagement rings but you need to take the 4Cs into consideration: carat, clarity, colour and cut.
Here’s a cheat sheet: cut is the most important. Diamond cut isn’t its shape but the proportions, symmetry and angles the diamond has so that it can reflect the most light. This will make it sparkle more – and you definitely want the ring to sparkle! Choose a diamond cut grade that is “Excellent” or “Ideal.”
Size Does Matter!
It’s not always easy to know how to size her ring without asking her to take a measurement of her finger (and that just spoils the surprise), but you can do this in smart ways. Look through her jewelry box to find rings she wears on her ring finger and then trace it on paper (inside and outside the ring) to bring to your jeweller.
Or, you could study her hands. Check her ring finger size in relation to one of your fingers – is it bigger than your pinkie? This can also help you choose the perfect fit.
Buying an engagement ring doesn’t have to feel like a stressful, difficult process. With the above tips and tricks, you’ll be guaranteed of choosing the perfect one for your bride-to-be
