Every person has things in common with everybody else. For example, we all bleed the same, we all have to eat, we all have to sleep, and we all sweat if the weather or environment gets hot. Sweating is the body’s way of cooling down, but for some reason, nature wasn’t able to create sweat that was odor neutral or smelled like flowers. For this reason, deodorant and antiperspirant were created, and because few people know and understand the differences of each, in this article we will discuss the differences.
Deodorant vs Antiperspirant: What’s The Difference?
Let’s start off with a bit of history to understand how far we’ve come. Deodorant and antiperspirant are both inventions that are fairly new in the scope of human existence. The first deodorant was produced by the company Mums in the year of 1888 and has been evolving ever since. Before this, people used to hide the smell by spraying perfume on themselves or by using sweat pads to absorb the sweat and prevent it from seeping through clothes. Not only was this uncomfortable, but it must also have been expensive to purchase all of the perfume that you would need.
We’ve come a long way to the point at which we now have prescription deodorant and antiperspirants for those whose sweat really smells, and for those who don’t want to sweat even a tiny bit. When it was first produced and sold, people didn’t really purchase it because they didn’t want to talk about their sweat, but now it has grown into an eighteen billion dollar industry.
We keep talking about the two, and they’re both applied under the armpits, but what are the differences? We use each of these products to prevent sweat from showing in our clothes, and to prevent the odors from being smelled by others.
Deodorant: You can easily tell the difference when you purchase deodorant. The first one would be to look at the front of the product label and see the word “deodorant.”Deodorants typically have some sort of fragrance or antibacterials in order to kill the bacteria that release the bad odors, and the fragrances to make your armpits smell better. Some of these ingredients include alcohol, coconut oil, and charcoal.
Antiperspirant: Antiperspirants are used to reduce the amount of sweat that your armpits release. The Federal Drug Administration considers an antiperspirant a drug because it causes a natural body function to stop. When the gel is applied to your armpits, it plugs the glands that cause you to sweat and this is an unnatural thing to do. One of the ingredients most actively found in antiperspirants is aluminum, so if you don’t know which product you’re buying, deodorant or antiperspirant, check the back label and look for aluminum.
Knowing Which is Best For You
Now that we’ve discussed the difference between deodorant and antiperspirants, how do you decide which one is best for you? Ultimately, it will be a personal choice. Maybe you don’t like to put certain chemicals on your body and will choose an all natural antiperspirant, who knows, but here are a few tips on how to choose either one of these choices.
If you sweat a lot, but aren’t worried about the smell, then go for an antiperspirant. If you don’t sweat that much, but hate the smell of your armpits, then choose a deodorant instead. If, however, you have both an excessive sweat problem, and stink, you should consider a stronger mix of both which will help the smell and reduce or stop the sweating.
We discussed the differences between deodorant and antiperspirants. This is a topic that not a lot of people think about, but should know. Maybe it will help those who are buying deodorant and wonder why they still sweat so much to change to an antiperspirant. It will allow people whose armpits smell bad to leave their antiperspirant and switch over to a deodorant. Everything is about knowing what product to buy and what the best product is for a particular need. Read the labels and choose the one that is right for you.
