Top Tips on Boosting Your Immune System

It’s now August – and how quickly has 2019 gone so far! The summer is hurtling towards its end and with it comes the promise of Autumn, and ultimately Winter.

Although there are a lot of things to be looked forward to about the colder weather creeping in, one of the negatives is the number of germs that comes with it. The change of the seasons is one of the prime times for catching bugs and germs spreading, especially if you have kids who are going back to school which is the breeding ground of all viruses.

As someone who works full-time and potentially has kids, the last thing you can afford to do is end up feeling poorly, off your game and unable to live your day to day existence as normal. So how can you prevent getting sick in those prime time months? Well here are some top tips on boosting your immune system, well in advance.

Manage Stress, and Get Enough Sleep

The first step to helping your immune system out well in advance, is by reducing stress in your life and improving your sleep.

Let’s start with stress. Not only work, but life can get stressful at times, and it can be difficult to know how to combat it. The best way of targeting stress, is by staying on top of whatever it is that’s stressing you out.

Say for example, you’re extra stressed at the moment because not only do you have a lot on at work, but you’re also looking to sell your house. Well why not do your research and find the easiest and cheapest way to sell your house, with companies such as https://www.readysteadysell.co.uk/we-buy-any-house/. Sometimes just by doing your research and getting on top of one aspect of your life, you can relieve your stress levels by a huge percentage. The less you have to worry about, the less overwhelmed you’ll feel.

Likewise, when it comes to sleep, try some sleeping techniques to help you drift off easier, into a more restful sleep. Breathing techniques and mindfulness are great for this, but if that’s not your thing there are other methods. Try staying off your phone and switching off the TV for a couple of hours before you sleep. It can really help you to switch off and improve the quality of your sleep.

The reason that lack of sleep and stress actually cause a weakened immune system, is because they produce an overload of the hormone cortisol, which ultimately contributes to a weakened immune system. Sometimes, it’s the more you know!

Eat More Onion and Garlic

Putting more onion and garlic into your cooking could also help to strengthen your immune system, and ultimately to fight off any germs that have already taken up tenancy in your body. They’re both well known for targeting and destroying the infections that cause viruses and bacteria in your system, and can even help to protect you against other diseases and ailments in the long term such as cancers, cardiovascular diseases and can also help to reduce your cholesterol levels, which is particularly important the older that you get.

Try and Get Some Time in the Sun

Depending on where you’re based, the climate and the general weather in the area, this could either be very simple or very difficult for you. Letting the sun touch your skin can be really good for you, because it helps your body to produce Vitamin D. Did you know that Vitamin D levels, when low, can make you more likely to get respiratory infections? That’s why colds, coughs and the flu are so common in the winter months. If you can, spend ten to fifteen minutes in the sun every day, or simply combat this by taking a Vitamin D capsule every day if you’re not in a sunny area.  It’s not the same, but it’ll help!

Curb Your Vices

Are you a smoker, or a heavy drinker? Are you both? Well this could massively contribute to the downfall of your immune system. Last but not least, cut down on your drinking, and if you smoke, give up the cigs! Tobacco makes your lungs more susceptible to bronchitis and pneumonia as well as many other serious diseases. Alcohol also effects the immune system and increases your risk of lung infections. That’s not to say don’t have a pint or two at the weekend, but just don’t overdo it. it’ll help your health in the long run!
