The basics of taking care of our appearance may seem simple enough, but there is always room for improvement. Feeling your best every day is closely connected to looking your best every day, and that means spending a considerable amount of time on grooming.
Leaving your shaving, dental care, or hair styling until the last minute just won’t cut it anymore! If you want to look good on your date or make a good account of yourself at a job interview, then make sure you’re giving yourself enough time to implement these men’s grooming hacks.
Most of these don’t take long and your body will thank you for it!
Retain Your Hair Color
Yes, unfortunately, you may well experience gray hairs at some point in your life. While it’s true that some men embrace this look and a lot of women actually love the “silver fox” look, going gray can be tough if that simply isn’t your preferred style.
The key thing to remember is that once you do begin spotting gray hairs more frequently, it’s time to make a choice: be the silver fox or start dyeing your hair.
And no, you don’t need to freak out and run to the nearest supermarket to pick up some hair dye after spotting gray hairs. There are easy ways to slowly but surely cover the gray hairs in a way that looks natural.
Schwarzkopf knows a thing or two about hair coloring for men, as demonstrated by the Schwarzkopf hair color guide, including the use of repigmentation cream and also semi-permanent dye (or tinting rinse).
Natural Way to Remove Earwax
Earwax is something that often gets neglected when we discuss men’s grooming. It doesn’t just look and feel gross, wax build-up can also lead to very painful blockages in the ear canals.
Many believe that Q-tips are the answer, but ENT doctors hate them because most of the time it simply ends up pushing the wax further inside your ear. Specialists can perform easy treatments if the wax gets very thick, but a better self-treatment is to use olive oil.
By using a dropper filled with room temperature olive oil, lie on your side and put in a few drops once or twice a week. You’ll find that the wax removes itself naturally in a pain-free way.
Getting a Great Shave
If you’re not a fan of beards and prefer to shave every day or so, then make sure you’re taking proper care of your skin beforehand. Razor rash or burn isn’t just a bad look, it’s painful too. That’s why we suggest these tips before you pick up your razor:
- Shower first to soften beard hair and open up the skin’s follicles. This also releases trapped dirt and dead skin cells.
- Pat your face lightly with a towel and apply pre-shave oil before hydrating shaving cream (see our guide on using organic skin care products). This will help remove any further dirt or debris and also assist the hair to stand up straighter.
- Showtime! It’s important to start your shave before the skin has a chance to dry. Shave with the grain, as shaving against can lead to a closer shave, but also skin irritation and ingrown hairs.
- After you’ve finished, apply a post-shave balm to help soothe and also moisturize the skin. Lip balms like Vaseline are useful to put on your skin should any nasty cuts happen.
- We recommend drying your razor thoroughly after using it, as this can help prevent oxidation and your blades from rusting.
Upgrade your Dental Game
A brush, tongue scrape, swish of mouthwash and a quick floss is just about all you can do for your dental hygiene, right? Well, not quite. Super floss has come along to change the game, primarily because it’s slightly thicker than regular floss.
You might find that certain gaps in your teeth are wider than others, which regular floss can’t help with so much. If you’re finding that you experience bad breath even after flossing, then try super floss and you may well discover it does a better job of clearing away food pieces from between your teeth.
Bonus tip: Chew parsley after dinner, as this will help neutralize bad odors from certain foods.
Dealing With Dark Eye Circles
Bags under our eyes is one of the most annoying things that men and women alike have to deal with. It’s not like they can be easily wiped away! However, there are a few helpful hints to reduce their severity that doesn’t mean resorting to expensive creams.
One method is to put two large spoons in the freezer for about 10 minutes and then place them over your closed eyes. The cold helps to reduce the swelling and puffiness around the eyes. A similar grooming hack is to try used teabags, which, after being left in the fridge for around 20 minutes, are also said to help reduce bags under the eyes.
Get That Good Scent For Longer
Vaseline isn’t just useful as lip balm and to soothe cuts from shaving, but also to help cologne stay fresh on your skin for longer. If you take a fingertip of Vaseline and dab a bit on both wrists and sides of your neck, you can then spray your cologne onto those areas and it will last a lot longer than usual.
This means you get to smell great for longer on that date! As for what to put on, who better to ask than women? It was decided that La Nuit de l’Homme (The Night of the Man) by Yves Saint Laurent was the sexiest choice a man could wear.
Men’s grooming hacks don’t have to be expensive or time-consuming, but they can help you out considerably to be the best man you can be. Practice these tips several times a week and you can not only improve your skin, breath, hair, eyes, scent and ears, but also your self-confidence.
